Pluto Pups

Pluto pups, also known as a dagwood dog is another treat we have adapted from the Americans, where over there it is known as a "corn dog".
They are found at fetes, carnivals and of course football games.
It was part of my pre game tradition whenever I would go and see a Melbourne Storm game.

With the biggest grudge match of the year coming up this week (Essendon vs. Collingwood for those who dont know) what better time to create your own at home footy feast.

I found this recipe on youtube. There is a pretty cool Aussie cooking show called "Nickos Kitchen", he does three videos a week and if you love your American food then this is the show for you. You can find the video for this recipe here.

This batter is enough to prob cover about 5 hot dogs, maybe stretched to 6.

1 cup self raising flour
1 cup corn meal (for us Aussies, thats polenta)
1 cup milk
1 egg - lightly beaten
5 hot dogs
5 skewers - cut the pointy end off
Vegetable oil for frying

1. In a large bowl combine the flour, polenta, milk and egg. Mix until it forms a thick batter. Pour into a tall glass.
2. Pat dry the hot dogs with paper towel. Insert a skewer into the centre of each hot dog. Dip into the batter, making sure its well coated. Allow any excess to drip off.
3. Meanwhile heat a large deep fry pan of vegetable oil over a medium heat. Fry the hotdogs a few at a time for approximately 3-4 mins, turning half way through, until golden on all sides.
4. Serve with tomato sauce, mustard or relish!
